A Mt. Pleasant man died over the weekend after a kitchen fire trapped him in his apartment. Emergency crews were called to the 200 block of West Smithfield Street in Mt. Pleasant Borough at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, when a neighbor reported smoke from next door. Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson said what appeared to be an accidental grease fire caused 69 year old Thaddeus Peckyno to become trapped in a back bedroom. The Trib reports that Mt. Pleasant and Scottdale firefighters were able to reach Peckyno and get him out of the apartment. He was taken by ambulance to Frick Hospital, but became unresponsive and died Sunday morning. The state fire marshal is investigating.
