A Pitt alum and innovator in medical technology is dead at the age of 89. CPAP machine inventor Gerald McGinnis passed away last Thursday. McGinnis was a Plum resident and was known for launching the Respironics company in order to sell CPAP devices in the late 1970’s. He sold Respironics to Royal Philips Electronics in late 2007 and publicly criticized the company in 2021 after lawsuits were filed over issues with their breathing assistance products that allegedly caused lung illnesses and cancer.
