A massive amount of lithium has been unearthed in Pennsylvania. University of Pittsburgh scientists said the discovery could eventually supply more than a third of what the U.S. needs. The U.S. Geological Survey calls lithium a critical mineral, used for rechargeable batteries including in cell phones and electric vehicles. Researchers noted that lithium is seen as essential to the nation’s economy for energy, manufacturing and defense.
