Local officials in Lower Burrell are considering a treatment to reduce the algae bloom at Burrell Lake. The state Department of Environmental Protection has done testing of the water and determined that the level of toxins currently being produced by the algae is harmful to humans and pets, meaning people and animals should avoid direct skin contact with the water. City Manager Greg Primm says they have reached out to a company called Solitude Lake Management, a firm that mitigates algae problems for other municipalities, and they are now waiting to get a quote on their service. He says a contract with Solitude will likely cost around three-to-four-hundred dollars-per-month between April and October.
