Pennsylvania lawmakers are working on legislation which would prevent schools from withholding meals from K-12 students with lunch debts. The bill would ban schools from denying students meals or forcing them to eat low-cost alternatives if they are unable to pay for regular food in the cafeteria, a practice which is nicknamed “lunch shaming.” It would also wipe away a chunk of student lunch debt. The legislation had previously been enacted in Pennsylvania but was repealed several years ago.
