The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County has been targeted in what was described by their solicitor as a “vendor impersonator scheme”. The Trib reports that the agency lost a significant amount of money in the fraud incident, but it was not a data breach and did not involve customer records or infrastructure related to the water and sewer operations. Officials with the MAWC said FBI investigators directed the authority to not disclose how much money was taken and are cooperating with them and with insurance investigators. FBI Spokesman Bradford Arick declined to comment, saying the agency would not confirm or deny their involvement in the investigation.
