Hempfield Area School District is boosting security with a new weapons detection system. During their meeting yesterday, the school board approved the purchase of six OpenGate detectors for a total cost of about 111-thousand dollars. Administrators say the scanners are mobile and they will be rotated around the buildings in the school system for random student checks and for screenings at some sporting events. They should be ready to go for the start of school this fall, according to Safety and Security Committee Chairman Mike Alfery.
