A Monessen teen is appealing his prison sentence for killing a 16-year-old classmate in 2022. The Trib reports that 18-year-old Terry Newton claims that Westmoreland County Judge Scott Mears ordered Newton to serve 7 and a half to 20 years in prison for the shooting death of Amari Altomore after Newton pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter. Newton’s attorney Ken Noga said the court gave inappropriate weight to the nature of the crime, “naively the death of another child in a shooting incident and the impact that it had on the victim’s family.”
