A fire station in New Kensington has been renamed in honor of a firefighter who died in the line of duty. The Trib reports that the city’s Number 4 fire station was renamed the Eric L. Mangieri station after approval from City Council earlier this week. Mangieri died when he was trapped in a burning house on Freeport Road in August of 1995. A memorial to him stands outside the station. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of Mangieri’s death, and New Kensington will host the Western Pennsylvania Firemen’s Association’s annual convention beginning on the anniversary date, when a memorial service will be held for Mangieri. He was the only New Kensington firefighter to die in the line of duty.
