Governor Josh Shapiro announced this week that his administration teamed up with the Public Utility Commission to secure a commitment from utility companies that makes sure homes eligible for the low-income home energy assistance program or LIHEAP will not have their power shut off during the federal government shutdown. KDKA-TV reports that last week, Shapiro signed a disaster declaration to make sure that state residents don’t suffer because of the lack of movement at the federal level. LIHEAP’s moratorium is usually in December but it was moved up to November 1st. Once the federal government shutdown ends, the state Department of Human Services will get the funding for LIHEAP and will start accepting applications.
