The municipal authority of Westmoreland County is seeking $1 million in state funding to repair a century-old underground brick arch that allows the sewage to flow through Scottdale. The Trib reports that the four-foot arch was found after the MAWC took ownership of the Westmoreland-Fayette Municipal Sewage Authority in 2023. The archway allows sewage and stormwater to pass under Chestnut Street to a nearby treatment plant, and there are concerns for erosion if the arch is left unrepaired, but a collapse is not imminent. The project includes digging down about eight feet and spraying the exposed arch with a chemical solution to stop any future erosion and prevent deterioration.
