Sammy Hagar is defending his involvement in President Donald Trump’s Freedom 250 event over the weekend.
The musician was supposed to perform during the 4th of July celebration but thunderstorms lead to the entire musical portion of the event being canceled. Although he didn’t actually perform, he still received backlash from some fans but Hagar has insisted his involvement wasn’t a “political thing.” He said the event was a celebration of the country’s birthday, regardless of who the president is, adding “we’ve been up, we’ve been down, and may always continue to survive. I hope that in another 250 years, the hate, the violence, the prejudice hopefully will not survive.”
In a separate post, Hagar revealed that he had planned to give a heartfelt speech during his performance and shared an image of the handwritten speech.
