The first set of senior tax rebates have been sent out to Hempfield Township residents whose applications have been approved. The Trib reports that the average rebate is $68, with a total of $18,400 sent out in the first round. Over 1000 applications for tax rebates have been received. The program was created in January after township supervisors added a 3-mill tax to fund the fire department. For residents who qualify, it essentially wipes out the cost of the added tax, keeping their township property tax bills steady.
