The future of Jeannette’s K-9 Diesel is uncertain at the moment. It was just weeks ago that city officials decided to end the K-9 Unit of the Jeannette Police Department due to the cost of funding the unit. Now, officials are working to decide what to do with four-year-old Diesel, who is said to be in the prime of his working life. Diesel’s handler, Sergeant James Phillips, says an agreement between him and the city to turn Diesel’s ownership over to Phillips has not been signed, because Phillips does not know if making Diesel a family pet is the best thing for a dog who was bred and trained to be a working dog. For now, Diesel is being housed at a kennel, which is costing the city 30-dollars per day.
