State police are helping the U.S. Secret Service with a theft and fraud investigation from February 24th. Police say the victim in Hempfield Township was scammed out of $5 million by individuals claiming to be with the Federal Trade Commission. They contacted the victim through a text message and persuaded them to send money via PayPal and then later to buy gold bars. The transactions were completed in the area of Unity Township. If you have been the victim of similar circumstances, even if a transaction never happened, call state police at 724-832-3288.
