Two New Kensington residents and an Arnold firefighter were hurt in a fire Sunday morning in the Valley Heights section of the city. The Trib reports that the fire was reported at 8:30 AM at a home in the 700 block of Kennedy Avenue. The fire was seen by an eyewitness on a wooden back deck. An off-duty New Ken police officer ran into the house and found a couple in their 30s asleep despite smoke alarms going off. The officer got the couple and a dog out of the house. Two cats died. The couple were taken by ambulance to West Penn Hospital, where they were treated for severe smoke inhalation and released. The Arnold firefighter was sent to Allegheny Valley hospital for treatment of a minor injury.
