The lead singer of the Village People has passed away.
Victor Willis co-founded the disco group in 1977. They were famous for their masculine costumes, and had a string of hits including “Macho Man,” “In the Navy,” and their biggest hit “YMCA.” In 2020, the Library of Congress entered the song into the National Recording Registry as “historically significant.” On Wednesday, the band confirmed that Victor Willis, who co-wrote the song and sung lead, had passed away Monday after a short but aggressive illness. The statement did not offer details.
Victor Willis was 74 years old.
