In 1967 The Beatles released their single “All You Need Is Love.”
In 1968 The Yardbirds broke up. Guitarist Jimmy Page formed the New Yardbirds to fulfill concert obligations. The Who drummer Keith Moon said of the new group, quote, “It’ll go over like a lead zeppelin.”
In 1980 The original lineup of Led Zeppelin performed their last show.
In 1986 David Lee Roth released his first solo album, “Eat ‘Em and Smile.”
In 2006 Pink Floyd’s Syd Barrett died of complications of diabetes. He was 60.
In 2007 Numerous artists, including Metallica, Bon Jovi, Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Lenny Kravitz, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Roger Waters, Genesis, and The Police performed at the international Live Earth concerts staged around the world to draw attention to the issue of global warming.
Snow Patrol keyboardist Tom Simpson was arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport. A warrant had been issued for him because he missed a court appearance in conjunction with a June 2006 arrest for alleged cocaine possession.
In 2008 Ringo Starr turned 68. He had said his birthday wish was for people to pause for a moment at noon local time and say “peace and love.” The former Beatle was in Chicago for his birthday, and roughly 200 fans met him at the Hard Rock Hotel at noon Central time to grant his wish.
In 2010 Paul McCartney made a surprise appearance at Ringo Starr’s 70th birthday concert at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Paul sang The Beatles’ song “Birthday,” and took part in the all-star finale of “With A Little Help From My Friends,” which also featured Foreigner’s Mick Jones, the E Street Band’s Steve Van Zandt and Max Weinberg, and John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono.
In 2017 The Official Charts Company overhauled the way it compiles the UK Top 40 in an effort to stop A-list artists elbowing newer acts out of the way.
In 2025 Drummer Matt Cameron announces his departure from Pearl Jam after 27 years with the group.
