In 1969 David Bowie released the album “Space Oddity.”
In 1975 Fleetwood Mac released their self-titled album, often referred to as The White Album. It was the first Fleetwood Mac album to feature Lindsey Buckingham as guitarist and Stevie Nicks as vocalist.
In 1979 Neil Young’s film “Rust Never Sleeps” premiered in Los Angeles. In 1987 Heart started a three week run at Number One on the U.S. singles chart with the song “Alone.”
In 1995 R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills had to have surgery for an abdominal ailment while the group was on tour in Germany.
In 2003 Pearl Jam served as their own opening act for a show in Boston, and performed a series of B-sides and rarities.
In 2004 Lenny Kravitz and Alanis Morissette were among the performers at the Prince’s Trust charity concert in London.
In 2006 The Rolling Stones launched the delayed European portion of the “A Bigger Bang” world tour with a show in Milan. The tour’s start had been postponed to give guitarist Keith Richards time to recover from a head injury he suffered while vacationing in Fiji two-and-a-half-months earlier.
In 2007 Former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler received an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the University of Sunderland, on the Northeastern coast of England.
In 2010 Jimmy Buffett hosted his Jimmy Buffett & Friends Live from the Gulf Coast concert on the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The show, in support of the region following the BP oil spill, was originally set for earlier in the month but was postponed due to Hurricane Alex.
In 2011 The Grass Roots singer Rob Grill died of complications from a stroke at a hospice in the Orlando, Florida area. He was 67.
In 2012 Bob Marley had a new species of crustacean named in his honor. The Arkansas State University marine biologist who made the discovery said the name stemmed from the respect and admiration he has for the reggae legend, and that the crustacean is as uniquely Caribbean as Marley.
In 2013 Bonnie Tyler received an honorary doctor of letters degree from Swansea University in Wales.
In 2014 Ramones drummer and producer Tommy Ramone died on this day at the age of 65 from cancer.
In 2015 James McElvar the singer in the Scottish boy band Rewind was said to be lucky to be alive after collapsing with heat exhaustion on board a flight traveling from Stansted to Glasgow.
In 2019 Bob Dylan’s superfan Bill Pagel bought Dylan’s Minnesota home. Dylan lived in the home from 1948 to 1969.
