Governor Shapiro is enacting what he says are the “strictest guardrails” on AI data centers in the nation. Shapiro signed an executive order Tuesday requiring data center developers in Pennsylvania to follow the Governor’s Responsible Infrastructure Development Standards announced earlier this year. Also known as the GRID Standards, they require developers to supply their own power, have a “significant portion” of that power come from clean energy sources and pay electricity costs for development out of their own pocket. The Governor’s Office says developers that break the GRID Standards would face “established penalties.”
