STATE OFFICIALS WARN THAT DATA CENTERS COULD PUT SIGNIFICANT STRAIN ON POWER GRID BY END OF DECADE

State officials are warning data centers could put a significant strain on the power grid by the end of the decade.  According to Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission Chair Stephen DeFrank, a recent report has found the grid may not be able to generate enough power to keep up with the growing demand from data centers by 2030.  He warned that power outages in the Commonwealth could “rise dramatically” if more data centers connect to the grid than anticipated without new power generation.  DeFrank says the state should increase overall power generation using a mix of sources including nuclear energy and natural gas.
