A service line that sent untreated water to steel mills and factories near Leechburg was punctured Thursday and left in need of major repairs. The Trib reports the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County said private contractors working along a Norfolk Southern railroad line when they hammered steel pylons into the ground that pierced sections of pipe 30 feet underground. They closed valves to ensure no additional water can flow from the Beaver Run Reservoir onto the surrounding area near the tracks. The damaged transmission line does not feed water to any active industrial sites, but will still be repaired.
